Feeding the homeless initiative
HISTORY
Feeding the homeless is an initiative currently run by Christian Kitchens; Norman and Martin affiliated with a local church in Walthamstow.

They have done an incredible job providing food and drinks to approximately 50 homeless people in the local area on a daily basis.

(History number of years ongoing initiative)

Food is donated and every evening benches are laid to serve food and hot drinks. This also gives an opportunity for everyone to come together and therefore having a positive impact on the people, creating a togetherness feeling.

Salaam Education Services teamed up with Christian Kitchens and have been supporting the initiative for the past two years.

This started off by donating meals on a monthly basis and volunteers from the local community went along to serve the food; on the last weekend of every month. We received a very positive response from everyone involved and therefore were able to serve three course meals such as soup, chicken, rice, lamb and cake and custard for dessert.

NOW

Due to the increased support from everyone and an increased awareness through word of mouth in the local community, we received an overwhelming response in terms of food donations and volunteers. This enabled us to scale up and be able to provide and serve food on a weekly basis. Whole families cooked and served food to the people with great pleasure and satisfaction.

Given our current situation and the fact that we were going through some of the coldest winter months, we felt it was our responsibility to do more for these people and therefore organised to provide winter packs including socks, gloves, scarves and hats.

We would like to ensure we can maintain our current initiative working with Christian Kitchens. We would like to expand our support with food provisions as well as going further and providing other basis necessities. As part of the community it is upon us to ensure that we can meet at least the basic needs for those that require it.

See below what volunteers have said.
"When I went to help, I was serving coffee to an individual who asked for an unusually strong black coffee. I asked them if they were sure if they wanted it this strong to which they responded 'Its either this or alcohol'".
